Sizing and Grading

Sizing and grading work together as you build your product. Sizing is determined at the beginning of your project while grading occurs towards the end of commercialization of your product.

Determining your sizing is an important part of product creation. We recommend researching your target consumer, competitor and understand what works best for your product. Here at Guided Makers we can help guide on the best size range for your product.

Sizing

A size range identifies the sizes offered for sale to the consumer.  Size ranges are defined as numeric or alpha, whichever is best suited to the product type or market needs.

Numeric sizing includes missy sizes such as 2, 4, 6, 8, etc or men’s waist sizes 28, 30, 32, 34 etc.

An alpha size range includes sizes such as Small, Medium and Large.  Alpha sizes can also be combined with numeric sizes. For example, a size small could equate to a 4/6 size in Missy sizing or a men’s medium equate to a 32/34 waist.

Size ranges are used on purchase orders, labeling, the graded measurement sheet and also relates to the sizing on the pattern. To aid the consumer in purchasing your product, size charts relating to your product and brand can also be created.

Grading

Grading is the process of creating all the sizes being sold. 

When developing a garment we start with just 1 size called the ‘base’ size.  A base size pattern is then used as a starting point for all the additional sizes.   The base size is increased and decreased proportionally based on the defined size range.

The graded measurement sheet in the tech pack and the grade work together.  The pattern maker then uses this information to create consistent sizing for a brand.
